Almost 65% of the total steel manufactured in the world (1.4 billion tons) is produced through the processes in which pure oxygen is used as the refining agent. India was one of the first countries in the world to adopt the Linz-Donawitz (LD) process of steel making using supersonic jets of 99.9% pure oxygen in the early sixties. With the progress of time, however, improvements have been made in the LD process and now several variants of the LD process exist, including the combined blowing process in which oxygen is blown from the top through multiple De-Laval nozzles in the form of supersonic jets with Mach number of approximately 2.2 (i.e., 2.2 times the speed of sound) and, simultaneously, the inert gas is blown through the bottom of the steel making vessel. Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has kept pace with most of the modern developments in steel making and now uses the combined blowing process. The capacity of each of the three combined blown converters of steel making at VSP is approximately 145 tons. By its very design, the steel making is a batch process. One cycle of charging of scrap and hot metal, addition of fluxes and blowing oxygen, and, finally, tapping the liquid steel into ladles requires around 45 minutes. An optimal control of the supersonic jets of high purity oxygen (more than 99.9% pure oxygen) is one of the key requirements of the steel making process. Else, it can have devastating consequences not only on the quality of steel produced but also on the safety of the process itself. The temperatures generated in the jet impact zone are of the order of 2200 oC. The most recent studies at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur by Prof.Brahma Deo of the Department of Material Science and Engineering have shown that the control of steel making process is difficult because it has an inherent component of "Chaos" in it. IIT, Kanpur has been working in close collaboration with some of the Steel Plants in India and abroad since last two decades. In particular, IIT, Kanpur and VSP have been working together to improve the various aspects of the steel making process at VSP since 2002 and there has been a continuous exchange of knowledge between the two, many a times trying out and testing new ideas on the shopfloor. On the basis of analysis of the operating practices at various Steel Plants, Professor Brahma Deo has developed a new algorithm to control the process, called "Beta Supersonic Blow Control". This algorithm is now being used as part of the implementation of Level-II control at Steel Melting Shop-I of RINL-VSP. Interestingly, the "Beta Supersonic Blow Control" algorithm steers the steel making process such that it avoids/reduces or suppresses, the "Chaotic" attractors which lead to operational problems of either dry slag formation or intense foaming of slag, popularly known as slopping. The "Beta Supersonic Blow Control" algorithm directs, dynamically, the changes required in the process control parameters such as lance height and oxygen flow rate, and advises the timely additions of iron ore and fluxes, while the blow is in progress, so as to arrive at the desired temperature and composition. Under the new scheme of Level-II control at VSP, the recording and processing of data is done on-line. The algorithm makes use of the on-line data provided and takes into account the changing process conditions with time. The "Beta Supersonic Blow Control" algorithm is a new strategy to control the steel making process. The credit equally goes to RINL - VSP Management and Engineers for their policy to encourage & promote applied research, desire to learn, and try out and adapt the new advancements done indigenously so as to put India on the World map of being the first in the field of steel making technology and simultaneously for RINL -VSP to get advantages also. The new technology can be easily adopted by the other Steel Plants in India. The collaboration between premier academic institutions like IIT, Kanpur and the heavy industries like Steel Plants is desirable not only for financial reasons, but also for developing the cutting edge technologies which we can then sell to the world

Decision Support Systems Vital for Good Corporate e-Governance: VN Vishnu

Mr. VN Vishnu, Commissioner of GVMC asserted that ‘Decision Support Systems are vital for good corporate e-governance. Addressing the delegates at the Valedictory function of the National Seminar on Corporate e-Governance, Mr. Vishnu stated that as the companies would like to be Simple, Moral, Accountable, Responsive, Transparent (SMART), the Management Information Systems and Decision Support Systems become essential and vital. The Computer professionals play an important role. In Today’s Globalization Information and Communication Technology had broken the barriers between developed and developing world, he added. Mr. Jeevan Lal, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Visakhapatnam who was guest of honour at the function explained the steps being taken by income tax department for e-governance and appealed to have ‘regard for Dharma’ which is essential for Good Corporate Governance. Mr. AP Choudhary, Director (Projects), VSP complimented Mr. Vishnu for the role model services he has been rendering for the good governance of GVMC and for the excellent facilities that are available in Visakhapatnam Mr. Choudhary who is the Chairman elect for Visakhapatnam Chapter of CSI promised to hold an international seminar in Visakhapatnam. On the concluding day talks were delivered on interesting topics like ‘Cloud Computing ‘by CSR Prabhu, ‘Virtualisation’ by Ali Ahmad, ‘Corporate e- Governance in VSP’ by Suman Das, ‘The State of Art of Cloud computing’ by Kalyan Chakravarthy and ‘Fuzzy Clustering based Cultivation for the rural sector by S Ram Prasad Reddy . For the relief of the delegates Dhimasa dance was also organized on Sunday Evening. All the delegates expressed immense satisfaction over the arrangements and content of the conference and profusely thanked Visakhapatnam Steel Plant for the support and Mr. Paramata Satyanarayana, Secretary of Vizag Chapter of CSI for the efforts .
