Mridh Vinayakam

Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Visakhapatnam Chapter organised ‘Mridh Vinayakam’ an event where the school children participated to make idols of Lord Ganesha with clay and terracotta. Mrs. A V N College High School, the 150 yrs old school building with its open to air Atrium was an ideal setting to this programme. Sri Sarveswara Rao, Principal and a very talented Sri Mohan, the Drawing Master and other staff members took the initiative with fervour and made the occasion memorable. Over 300 children from 18 schools (both Govt. and Private) participated in the event. In olden days mud or clay was taken out from lakes before the arrival of the rainy season and was used to make the idols, The idols were immersed in the lake after the festivities, These idols easily get dissolved in water. This was a cyclic chain without causing harm to the environment. Moreover mud/clay has the quality of purifying the water Plaster of Paris and other idols made of artificial material and colours may look more attractive but at the same time they very harmful to the environment as they do not dissolve in water. PoP makes the bottom of the lake harder which results in drying up of the water bodies. The chemical present in these materials may cause various diseases and disorders in living beings. “Mridh Vinayakam” lasted for two and half hours. All the participating children discovered their creative capability in actually using their hands to express it all through Mridh Vinayakam. Their enthusiasm and smiles were contagious catching all those around -- especially INTACH members and representatives of the Media present.
