DEATH ONBOARD IN SUBMARINE

The Indian Navy regrets to inform the loss of life of a sailor, Kump Dan, Leading Electrical Mechanic Power, owing to an accident that occurred while carrying out operational tasks onboard an Indian Naval Submarine while alongside at Visakhapatnam today, 26 Feb 10. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause and circumstances leading to the accident.

INDIAN ARMY GOLDEN PALM TRI MEDIUM EXPEDITION FLAGGED OFF

The Tri-medium Expedition Team of the Headquarters of Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala (HQ ATNK & K) Area, also known as the Golden Palm Area of the Indian Army which arrived in the city on 22 Feb 2010 was flagged off by Rear Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command on its return journey to Chennai today, 26 Feb 2010.

The expedition of HQ ATNK & K Area covers all three dimensions of Water, Sky and Earth and comprises Sailing, Para Motoring and Cycling teams. Sailing is being undertaken by Madras Engineer Group and Centre, Para Motoring by Para Regimental Training Centre, both located at Bangalore and the Cycling by 5th Battalion Jammu & Kashmir Riffles. The aim of expedition is to promote the spirit of adventure, spread awareness and motivate the youth to join the Armed Forces.

Apart from an interactive session, a demonstration was also organised by the team on Para Motoring for school students, NCC Cadets and Ex-Servicemen. The Para Motoring and Cycling Expedition teams are also scheduled to meet the school/ College students en-route, at Guntur and Vijayawada and will undertake similar demonstrations there as well.

Sri PK Bishnoi, CMD of RINL has asked the ‘Agro Forestry’ department of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to plant more trees so that the ‘building of Agro Forestry department’ is hidden by green trees and this should be symbolic for this office.

Sri PK Bishnoi was Chief Guest at the inauguration of a new building complex of ‘Agro Forestry, Corporate Social Responsibility and Stock Verification’ departments.

CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF AND SHRI PRADEEP KUMAR DEFENCE SECRETARY AT VISAKHAPATNAM.

Admiral Nirmal Verma PVSM AVSM ADC, Chief of the Naval Staff and Shri Pradeep Kumar, IAS, Defence Secretary, arrived Visakhapatnam today, 25 Feb 10 on a two day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. On arrival at INS Dega they were received by Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command. The Chief of the Naval Staff and Defence Secretary reviewed the Eastern Fleet at sea wherein Ships, Submarine and Aircraft took part. Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command and Rear Admiral P Murugesan, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet accompanied the Chief of the Naval Staff and Defence Secretary during the exercises at sea.

AIR MARSHAL SC MUKUL AT EASTERN NAVAL COMMAND

Air Marshal Suresh Chand Mukul, PVSM AVSM VM VSM ADC, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chiefs of Staff Committee, Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff (CISC/HQIDS) accompanied by his wife Mrs. Seema Mukul, President, Defence Wives Welfare Association arrived Visakhapatnam today, 20 Feb 10, on a three day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. He was received on arrival at INS Dega by Rear Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command.

The Air Marshall interacted informally with the officers of the Command at a Reception hosted in his honour, by Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. In the course of his stay here the Flag officer is scheduled to visit the Wireless Equipment Unit stationed at Visakhapatnam, and also undertake a Windshield Tour of the Dolphin Hill Accommodation Project and the Kursura Submarine Museum.

Mrs. Seema Mukul interacted with the ladies of the Eastern Naval Command and will also visit the Submarine Museum. The Air Marshal is will depart Visakhapatnam on Monday, 22 Feb 10.

EASTERN AND WESTERN FLEETS COMPETE AT THE PULLING REGATTA 2010

Pulling Regatta-2010, involving members of both the Eastern Fleet and the visiting Western Fleet was conducted today, 16 Feb 10 at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam. The races were held in the four categories of Junior Sailors, Senior Sailors, Officers and the Best Whaler.

The Regatta that brings out the virtues of Pulling together, esprit- de-corps and camaraderie, acquired a keener spirit with the visiting members of the Western Fleet taking on the Local Team. The Regatta involved a keenly contested race in each of the four Categories, calling for strenuous practice, physical grit and sound mental strength lasting the entire distance of 1.3 km in the Naval channel.

In the Individual Events, Eastern Fleet swept away all the three categories of Junior Sailors, Senior Sailors and Officers. The Silver Oar for the Best Whaler was also bagged by the Eastern Fleet, thus being adjudged the overall Winner and awarded the coveted Cock.

Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command was the Chief Guest on the Occasion and gave away the prizes to the Winners. Flag Officers in station, Senior Officers, Sailors and their families also witnessed the Regatta and cheered the participants enthusiastically.

Major fire in 3- storeyed building

SALVAGE OPERATION Fireman extinguishing the fire that broke out in a three- storeyed building at Dwarakanagar on Friday.

The building also houses National Insurance Company and a lodge.

Official says fire limited to footwear showroom.

The fire was said to be started at around 6:30 p.m. reportedly due to an electric shot circuit in Bata Showroom on the ground floor. The showroom was engulfed in flames within no time and fire spread to the National Insurance Company Office and the Dwaraka Lodge on the above floors.Fire continued to rage even after one hour as firemen tried to bring it under control with waterfrom long house pipes.

HR plays an important role in improving production and productivity leading to sum total of profit maximization – Sri PK Bishnoi, CMD

Sri PK Bishnoi, CMD, RINL/VSP elaborated on the role of HR in over all performance of an organization. He delivered a talk on "Public Sector – Nurturing HR for Profit Maximization" during "World HRD Congress 2010" convention held today at Mumbai. He said that each and every financial parameter achieved in a company is only because of contribution from human resources. HR plays an important role in improving production and productivity leading to sum total of profit maximization of an organization. The factors which are implemented right from the initial stage of commissioning at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant like multi skill culture, shift overlapping, zero overtime, rationalized designations inculcating right attitude etc., later helped company to turn around. He also elaborated different employee involved schemes available at VSP to harness the potential of HR at Vizag Steel. He also stressed the evolving of Company Vision by involving all the grass root employees of the company. At VSP around 7000 employees were given training on Vision, Mission and Objectives of the company. He also mentioned that at VSP, employees are encouraged to communicate through different fora.

Sri Bhaskar Chatterjee, Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises was the session chairman. He appreciated the role of PSUs in nation building. The other speakers were Sri Arup Roy Choudhry, Chairman – SCOPE & CMD, NBCC Ltd and Sri S Hajara, CMD, Shipping Corporation of India Ltd.

CMDs and Director (HR) s of several PSUs, Sr. HR personnel, Management Consultants participated in the convention and appreciated the immense role human resources have played in harnessing to its fullest potential at VSP.

NAVY CHILDREN SCHOOL CELEBRATES ANNUAL DAY

The Secondary Wing of Navy Children School celebrated its Annual Day in an entertaining display of talent on Wednesday, 10 Feb 10. The Program was woven around the theme Utsav, meaning festivities. Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command was the chief Guest on the occasion and Mrs. Nani Singh the Guest of Honour. The Principal NCS, Mr. P Sanath Kumar presented the Annual Report highlighting the progress made by the School over the last year.

Speaking on the Occasion, Vice Admiral Anup Singh applauded the talent on display. He urged the children to look beyond the basics of education and strive to be well rounded citizens of the Nation. The Guest of Honour, Mrs. Nani Singh, gave away Prizes to meritorious students who had excelled in academic and co-curricular activities.

MALDIVIAN SHIP HANDED OVER AFTER REFIT AT ENC

Coast Guard Ship Huravee of the Maldives National Defence Forces that was undergoing a maintenance refit at the Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam) for over four months has completed its refit on schedule. The occasion was marked by a Ceremony held at the Indian Naval Jetty at Circars Naval Base on Thursday, 11 Feb 10, wherein the Ship was formally handed over in the presence of Honourable Raksha Rajya Mantri, Shri MM Pallam Raju, Honourable Minister of State for Defence and National Security of Maldives, Shri Uz Mohamed Muiz Adnan and Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The Ceremony was also attended by other Flag Officers and Naval personnel

MNDF CGS Huravee arrived at Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam on 08 Oct 09 for undergoing refit at the Naval Dockyard. Erstwhile INS Tillanchang, the second of the Fast Attack Crafts built in 2001at Garden Reach Shipyard Limited, Kolkata, the ship was transferred to the Maldives National Defence and Security on 16 Apr 06 in continuation of the initiatives to strengthen Bridges of Friendship with our maritime neighbours. The ship has had an earlier refit at Visakhapatnam in 2007-08.

In the present refit, the machinery and equipment were overhauled and extensive performance trials undertaken. The complete hull was surveyed and necessary repairs effected. High Performance Paint Scheme, applied on the complete hull for the first time, will enhance the ships life by six to seven years. Additionally, during the course of the refit, the ships crew was also trained on various systems by the Naval Dockyard personnel and tested for proficiency by the Local Workup Team, Visakhapatnam.

Speaking on the Occasion, Shri Mohamed Muiz Adnan called the Ceremony a proud monument to the deep bonds of friendship and brotherhood existing between the two countries, especially the long standing relationship and cooperation between the Armed Forces of the two Countries that sets an example for other Nations in the region. He spoke of Huravee being a most valued gift by the people of India that has enhanced the extended patrol capability of the Island Nation and he expressed gratitude on behalf of the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Forces and the people of Maldives.

WELFARE INITIATIVES BY THE NAVY AT MULGADA

As a part of the Community Development Program undertaken by INS Eksila, a Medical Camp for free health check-up of nearly 200 residents, including 70 school children, of the neighbouring villages of Mulgadda and Edhuvanipalem was held today, 10 Feb 10. Surgeon Rear Admiral Manisha Jaiprakash, Command Medical Officer, Eastern Naval command who inaugurated the Camp, stressed on the importance of early detection of chronic and communicable diseases.

Apart from Free Medical Camps, the welfare measures initiated in the past under the aegis of the Eastern Naval command include repairs and refurbishment of community halls, anti-malarial fogging/spraying and liaison with local civil authorities for better sanitation, supply of water and electricity to the neighbouring villages.

During his stay he will be the Chief Guest at the Handing over Ceremony of a Maldivian Coast Guard Ship. Later, he is also scheduled to visit Hindustan Shipyard Limited. The Minister will depart Viskhapatnam PM 11 Feb for Kakinada..

NAVYS TRAINING CAMP AT RAMBILLI CONCLUDED

A four day Training Camp conducted at Rambilli village for the Officers of the 77th Basic Submarine Course and Sailors of the 76th Basic Submarine Course concluded on Sunday, 07 Feb 10. A total of 24 trainee officers and 63 trainee sailors were divided into four divisions for the camp that aimed at exposing the trainees to land battle conditions and inculcating a spirit of competitiveness and camaraderie. Inter-divisional activities conducted during the training camp included a 15 km approach march, night route march over difficult terrain, a 10 km josh run, inter-division volleyball and tug of war matches as well as handling of small arms.

In addition, a medical camp was also conducted for the local populace. There was an overwhelming response to this medical camp during which a total of 250 villagers from the Rehabilitation Colony near Kottapatnam were provided free medicines and treatment.

The physically demanding training camp culminated in a campfire the highlights of which included finals of Tug of War and Tent Layout Competitions, Blindfold Arms Stripping Demonstration and a scintillating entertainment programme. Rear Admiral MT Moraes, Flag Officer Submarines was the Chief Guest and gave away prizes to the Winners of various competitions held in the course of the four day camp.

BHPV FLAGS OFF OXYGEN BUFFER VESSELS FOR RINL

                BHPV, a fully owned Subsidiary of Navarantna BHEL today Flagged off a Heavy Consignment of Oxygen Buffer Vessel for RINL, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. The 200M3 capacity vessel fabricated by BHPV for SMS to (Steel Melting Shop) of RINLs prestigious fast track expansion project, has been flagged off by  Shri S.S.Gupta, MD, BHPV, Shri S.S.Kumar, GM, RINL. On this occasion            Shri A.S.Nagaraja, Director (OPS), Shri P.V.Sridharan, Director (HR),                  Shri P.Phalgun Rao, ED (OPS) and other Senior Officials of BHPV and RINL are present.

              The 4 Mtr Dia, 20Mtr Long Vessel weight about 116 MT and is being transported by special low bed 100 tyre 12axle hydraulic trailer brought from Pune. Today’s flagged off marked the beginning of the consignment out of order valued at Rs.23 crores.

           Addressing the gathering after the flag off at BHPV’s factory, MD, BHPV informed that the Company now firmly on its revival path and will continue its in valuable contribution to core sector of the Country. BHPV has recently bagged order for similar vessels from Tata Steel, Jamshedpur also which is ample proff of the renewed confidence of customers in BHPV’s capabilities.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility Activities, RINL supported Krushi Orthopaedic Welfare Society, Visakhapatnam for purchase of equipments such as ‘PB Ventilator with air compressor and standard accessories’, ICU Cot with mattresses’, ‘e-Therasonic 2 channel’, etc at an estimated cost of 7.35 lakhs.Krushi Orthopaedic Welfare Society, a Non Government Organization established in 1987 is running rehabilitation programmes for the poor and differently- abled and for the aged with Orthopaedic problems. Its aim is to serve the disabled persons in rural areas and to establish economical treatment centres for the orthopaedically injured and disabled.The cheque was presented by Mr. PK Bishnoi, CMD of RINL to Dr Kiran. Dr Kiran Profusely thanked CMD of RINL. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Bishnoi stated that RINL would always encourage good work being done by all NGOs and would support them financially within the framework of RINL-CSR Policy.Y Manohar, Director (Personnel), Senior Officials of VSP and representatives of Krushi Orthopaedic Welfare Society were present at the function.

NCC CADETS ONBOARD NAVAL TRAINING SHIPS FOR SEA EXPERIENCE Ten NCC cadets from various Naval NCC Units in the country embarked the ships of the First Training Squadron of the Indian Navy on Thursday, 04 Feb 09 at the Visakhapatnam Naval Base. The cadets will sail on these ships for a period of over one month for Sea Experience. The ten cadets specially selected from amongst the large number of Naval NCC cadets in the country will be provided exposure and firsthand experience of life on board a warship of the Indian Navy. During their stay on board they would participate in all the training activities on board the ships and in all evolutions at sea. Such embarkations are a regular feature and ten Naval NCC cadets are afforded this opportunity once every six months as part of their personality development and grooming as citizens of India.

A twelve member team of the Eastern Naval Command White Water Rafting Expedition 2009-10 was flagged off by Captain PJ Sudhir, Commanding Officer, INS Satavahana today, 02 Feb 10. The team of two officers and 10 sailors drawn from various ships and establishments of the Eastern Naval Command is led by Lieutenant Commander RS Kumar. The team is scheduled to establish its Base Camp at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh, and would undergo basic training that includes dummy drills for paddling, raft handling, survival drills and emergency life saving procedures. After the training and acclimatisation program, the Team will commence the expedition from Tuting and proceed downstream along the Brahmaputra to Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh, covering a distance of nearly 230 Km. In the course of their expedition, the team members will be interacting with various people from the hinterland and spreading awareness about the role and significance of the Indian Navy.

1. INSV Mhadei, with Cdr Dilip Dhonde at the helm departed Port Stanley, Falkland Islands today. 2. Cdr Donde set course for penultimate leg of his voyage to Cape Town, South Africa. This leg of about 3600 nm (7000 Kms) will take about 24 days during which he will have to overcome the challenges posed by the Atlantic Ocean in general and the roaring forties in particular. 3. It may be recollected that Cdr Dilip Dhonde had sailed from Christ Church New Zealand on 12 Dec 09 and travelled about 5000 nm (9000 Kms) in the third leg of his voyage and reached Falklands on 15 Jan 10.

A Medical camp was conducted by the Station Health Organisation (Visakhapatnam) for the under privileged children of the Children of Faith Orphanage near Vidulanarrava village (Duvada Junction), Vishakhapatnam. The Camp was held under the aegis of Headquarters Eastern Naval Command for the Arogya Wing of the Navyl Wives Welfare Association (Eastern Region). The Camp was inaugurated by Mrs. Meenu Prabhakar, Vice President NWWA (E/R). The Chief Guest on the occasion was Surgeon Rear Admiral Manisha Jaiprakash, Command Medical Officer, Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. The objective of the camp was to provide a range of preventive health care services for the underprivileged children like Immunisation, Screening for treatable diseases, OPD Care, Health Education regarding communicable diseases and oral health awareness, Vitamin A & Iron supplementation, Water Quality Monitoring and Spraying for vector control. Gifts and eatables were distributed to all children by NWWA. Nearly one hundred and twenty children and care takers of the orphanage benefited from this camp.

Sankalp, the Navy School for special children, run by Navy Wives Welfare Association (Eastern Region), celebrated its Twentieth Anniversary with gaiety and splendour at the Samudrika Naval Auditorium today, 29 Jan 10. In her Annual Report, the Principal, Mrs. Vimala Prasad highlighted the training curriculum and activities of the school. The students with multiple disabilities presented a Musical, Child Power The older students enacted a play Sita Swayamvar. With large smile lighting up her face, Ms. Lakshmi enchanted the audience with her graceful dance performance. Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, the Chief Guest on the Occasion, lauded the efforts and congratulated the children on putting up a delightful performance. The Flag Officer cut the Anniversary cake along with the participants and gave away the prizes to children showing all round progress and also to the most motivated parents. The stars of Sankalp, looking back with satisfaction and moving ahead with confidence, enthralled the spectators that included parents, Senior Officers and ladies, as well as representatives from several Special Schools and Organisations from the City.

A Ceremonial passing out parade was held at Shipwright School today, 29 Jan 10, on the occasion of passing out of the 122nd batch of Shipwright Apprentices from the School. The Chief Guest on the Occasion, Commodore GV Babu, Commanding Officer, INS Circars, reviewed the parade and presented the Trophy for the First in Overall Order of Merit to Maninder Singh, Shipwright Apprentice. The Passing out batch also included eight Sri Lankan nationals. The Course underwent 130 weeks of training in various facets of Naval Architecture, Ship Building and Maintenance of ships at Shipwright School. The course comprised a mix of theoretical and extensive practical training in welding, carpentry and GRP works. Apart from this, the trainees were also subjected to regular military training like drill, parade, firing etc. The trainees were also exposed to adventure camps, cycle expeditions, various sports events and extracurricular activities for overall development of their personality. An Awards Ceremony held in the evening had Commander Shantanu Bose, Officer-in-Charge Shipwright School give away proficiency awards to the teaching and support staff for outstanding and dedicated services rendered during the training period.

The General and Mrs. Kapoor are scheduled to depart Visakhapatnam on Tuesday 05 Jan 10.

CMR Central A new mall/ multiplex theatre 'CMR Central' was inaugurated at Maddilapalem on 2-1-2010. The new mall featured multinational brands and world-class food, fun and fantasy for all age groups. There is a special entertainment zone for children. CMR Group Chairman Chandana Mohana Rao described it as a New Year gift to the people of the city who have patronised the group for the last 25 years. He recalled that CMR was the first to introduce the concept of a ‘mall’ in north Andhra.
