OLDEST SUBMARINE INS VAGLI CELEBRATES 35th ANNIVERSARY : The oldest operational submarine of the Indian Navy, INS Vagli, recently celebrated her 35th Anniversary at Visakhapatnam. The Anniversary Celebrations were marked by a host of activities that included a Tree Plantation Drive and a Blood Donation Camp. The traditional cake-cutting ceremony was conducted in the presence of Commodore Commanding Submarines (East) Commodore Rajesh Sarin, the Chief Guest on the occasion, who congratulated the crew and the support staff on the efforts put in by them in keeping the submarine fighting fit.

Commissioned on 10th August, 1974 at Riga in former USSR, the submarine is one of the eight submarines of Foxtrot class inducted between 1971 and 1974. Most of these have been decommissioned after long and distinguished service. INS Vagli is the only submarine of the class still in active service and one of the oldest operational submarines in the world. The 1800-ton submarine is capable of diving to more than 150 meters and carries a lethal punch of sensors and weapons to attack surface ships and submarines. It is manned by a crew of 10 officers and 70 sailors. In her illustrious service of 35 years, the submarine has operated on both Eastern and Western coasts and has participated many important combat missions and major naval exercises. Despite her vintage, the submarine has been sailing extensively and was adjudged the 'Most Spirited Submarine' for the year 2008-09. The submarine is presently being commanded by Commander Abhijit Kapre.
