Cdr V. SRIRAMULU I.N (Retd) - The Iron Man Of Vizag

V. Sriramulu was born in Machilipatnam, Krishna dist on 18th July 1923. After his graduation from Hindu college there, and after a short stint as a local auditor in the military accounts dept, he joined the Royal Indian Navy in March 1944. He has been through World War II for over a year. At the end of the war, he was in Karachi. Finally after about 36 years of service in the Navy, he retired and settled down in Visakhapatnam. While in Navy, he was a specialist in Navigation and Radar. Thereafter, he worked in the Dredging Corporation of India for 8 years before finally saying good bye to active service.
While in the Navy, sailing yachting was his main hobby. Almost every evening he used to be in a boat sailing. He took part in several national and international races, winning quite a few. After retirement, almost at the age of 68 to 70 he took up walking and running and excelled in this field too. In December 2010 he took part in “The Asian Masters Athletic Championships, Kuala Lumpur, winning 4 gold medals. In the world championships held in California in 2011, USA from 6th to 17th July 2011 won a Gold Medal in the 20 km race walk and two silver medals in the 5 km and 10 km race walks. He did some mountaineering as well. Along with his son, he climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa in 2002 and later made two trips to Himalayas-once to Everest base camp and next to the Pindari glacier. He and his team mate actually set up their tent and slept for one night on the glacier, the frozen river - quite an experience.
Cdr V.Sriramulu won the gold medal in the World Masters Athletic Meet, California July 6-17, 2011 and also won the gold medal in the 20 km race walk and silver medals in the 5 km and 10 km race walks. Earlier, after an impressive show in the veterans Nationals, he participated in the Asian Masters Athletic Championships held in Kuala Lumpur in December 2010 and won four gold medals in the 5 km race walk and 400 M, 800 M and the 1500 M runs.

On the personal front, Cdr. Sriramulu has a son, a doctor in USA, and two daughters- the elder one settled in Bengaluru and the younger one, a doctor- a Gynaecologist serving in UK. His wife Smt. Satyavati is a home maker.
