It was a moment in history when King Richards stepped out on to the Indira
Priyadarsini Municipal Corporation Stadium, in 1987 to play against the Board
President XI led by Rahul Dravid. People had never expected an international match to be held here. As
centuries were notched up and Vivian Richards in his flamboyant style hit a few balls
across the boundaries, it was a moment to cherish for ACA and VDCA. This match
lay the foundation for further international matches to be held and has put the small port
city on the map.
Duleep and Deodhar trophy matches
brought the rising stars of cricket to
Vizag and the benefit matches helped the locals see celebrities like Gavaskar, Kapil
Dev, Viswanath, Amarnath etc. in action.
1994 saw Mohammed Azaruddhin take India to a thrilling four run victory over Courtney Walsh's
West Indies. Shane Warne and Vizag made their debut at this venue in the 1996
World Cup,
even if it was a fight between David and Goliath, Kenya and the mighty Aussies.
Great players of yesteryears like Clive Lloyd have also visited this venue.
England has also played here.
