Vizag as the torch bearer of the Andhra tradition - March 27, 1999

Cricket in Visakahaptnam, like the city itself, grew from modest beginnings and it was all due to the efforts of a gentleman named G. S. N. Rao, affectionately called Ayya, that the Visakhapatnam Cricket Club was formed.

Dr. Radhakrishna invited India's first Test captain, Col. C. K. Naidu, to come to Waltair as the cricket coach, but the idea fizzled out after Radhakrishna's departure. Fifty years later, the Andhra University conferred an honorary doctorate degree, the first to be given to a sportsman, during its convocation to Sunil Gavaskar. C. S. Nayadu was the second such cricketer to receive such an award.

The birth of Andhra Cricket Association was a historic event in the annals of Andhra Sport. C. K. Nayudu and C. S. Nayudu, two famous Andhrites, along with Mushtaq Ali came to Guntur and played a festival match in 1953, marking the birth of Andhra Cricket Association.

The formation  of the Visaskhapatnam District Cricket Association in 1962, and its subsequent inauguration by the then Governor of A. P., Gen. Srinagesh was a shot in the arm for Andhra cricket.

Andhra Cricket Association and Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association have successfully hosted eight international events in the last ten years including a World Cup tie in 1996. The Indira Priyadarsini Municipal Corporation Stadium has been the venue for all these events.

Dilip Vengsarkar, John Wright, Vivian Richards, Ashuman Gaekawad, Sachin Tendulkar, Mike Atherton, Courtney Walsh, Azarauddhin, Maurice Odumbe and Rahul Dravid - are some of the captains who have gone out into the middle for the toss at this venue, against a lovely back drop of a hill range with the crowd cheering with enthusiasm.

Arjuna Ranatunga and Wasim Akram stepped out in the middle on Mar 27, 1999 for a combat between the champions of '92 and '96. It will be yet another moment of joy for the cricket lovers and a milestone in the annals of Vizag and Andhra cricket.
