Kanyasulkam, a century old magnum-opus of Mahakavi Gurazada Apparao, later dramatized into a play-let, still draws a huge audience across Andhra Pradesh. Recently, the students of Sri Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad enacted this play at the Kalabharati Auditorium on the 1st of August, 2005, under the direction of, Sri. J. V. Ramana Murthy.

Sri J. V. Ramana Murthy, brother of Late Sri. J.V. Somayajulu (Sankharabharnam fame) is a noted stage artist and director of several Telugu films and television serials. The title of this play meaning 'dowry given to the bride by the bridegroom' is a social comedy, set in a backdrop of the 19th century.

The story revolves around Buchamma (played by 'Surabhi', Swapna Subhadra), a young widow from an orthodox Brahmin family. Madhuravani (Ms. Jayasri), a harlot, saves Buchamma from being deceived by Girisam (Mr. K. Navinbabu). Girisham, a fraud and a swindler elope with Buchamma all the way to Visakhapatnam, promising to marry her there..

Kanyasulkam depicts the social and economic conditions of Telugu society during the days of the Raj. Gurazada Apparao, a social reformer and a writer, fought against the social evils of caste, child marriage, polygamy that prevailed in our society. Through Kanyasulkam, Gurazada tries to unfold the misery and plight of young widows in those days. Kanyasulkam is a parody of the social system of that era. Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam appear prominently as the author Gurazada Apparao hails from this region.
The cast includes new artists whose performance is indeed impressive. Mr. P. Rammohanarao's music direction and S.Gopala Krishna and Bharani who have provided the make-up, deserve mention. 'Cheneta Samacharam', a monthly magazine organized the play-let.
