Rajamahendri Ramayana Paintings
Sistla Srinivas

Sistla Srinivas, Assistant Professor, Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University, exhibiting reprints of 'Rajamahendri Ramayana Paintings' with translations of Telugu text (made by him), along with a commentary 'Nayanabhiramaanuseelana' at the Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University on the 17th of March, 2005.

A little about 'Rajamahendri Ramayana Paintings': With the spectre of war hovering over Andhra in 1757-’58 A.D., distress, fear and panic spread among the people. Rajahmundry became the launching pad for the ruthless war against Bobbili waged by local rulers and French soldiers. During such trying times, two painters ‘Nandigam Nagesam and Kamaroutu Venkatesam’ produced a series of 53 paintings on the Ramayana. Kolapelli Buchenna, an associate of the painters , wrote a prose commentary on paintings in Telugu and an unknown person translated it into Persian.

After the war, a Frenchman Dupant de Laval collected the set, took it to France and gifted it to Duchess de Angouleme, the daughter of the King Luis XVI. After the French revolution, this set reached Germany and at present it is in the collection of the Hamburgisches Museum Fur Volkerkunde at Hamburg.

Union Budget 2005-2006: PC acts, Vizag reacts

The Union Finance Minister Mr P. Chidambaran's budget has drawn mostly positive reactions except, not surprisingly, from the opposition parties. While most dailies and other publications gave a national perspective to it, we spoke to a cross-section of people in Vizag to get their views.

Vizag, which has a sizeable population of salaried people, rejoiced at the cut in income tax rates across all slabs. Speaking to VizagCityOnline.com, Mr. P. Nookaraju, a Public Sector employee, said: "Mr. Chidambaram has done the right thing by reducing the burden of the salaried class who have been the only honest tax payers all these years but yet were always carrying the maximum burden".

In line with the reaction in the rest of the country, Vizagites are up in arms against the imposition of a tax on cash withdrawals from banks with the stated intention of preventing money from going into the 'black economy'. Ms. M. Supriya, a resident of Gajuwaka, said: 'This is a most impractical step. Instead of checking the spread of 'black money', all it is going to do is inconvenience the common man'.

Mr V.J. Gupta

"It is a balanced budget with a thrust on the right sectors. However, we will have to see if it is implemented. De-reservation of certain items from the small sector is another welcome and long overdue step. I am not too clear about VAT as it does not affect my main product - books"

Mr V.J. Gupta
 Proprietor, Gupta Brothers Books

Regarding the 2% tax on 'branded jewellery', initially various associations of gold shops in the city joined hands and formed the 'Vizag Gold Club' (VGC) to protest against this. However, speaking to VizagCityOnline.com, Mr. G. Manoj Kumar of Vaibhav jewellers said: "Since the tax is on branded jewellery only and not on gold per se, it will not affect most jewellers in Vizag. We are happy with this move."

VizagCityOnline.com took also spoke to a few people who are experts in their respective fields to get their opinions:

Mr Gorthi Subba Rao

"The proposed budget will be able to aid reforms. The tax structure has been simplified - this move will definitely allow tax analysts and chartered accountants to focus on more important features than just reading through the balance sheets or tallying of accounts. They can now study tax planning for corporate houses, establishments.

Though the tax structure has been simplified, it will not make accountants redundant. I feel the budget proposal is oriented towards benefiting the middle-class employee. Overall a good budget."

Mr Gorthi Subba Rao
President of Vizag Chapter of Institute of Chartered Accountants

Mr S.C. Choudhary

"The proposed budget for fiscal 2005-2006 is exporter-friendly. There has been a 50 percent reduction in the duty imposed on crude petroleum products in India. Along with that, handling rates of freight is also being reduced, thus the importers are happy too. The proposed budget will bring about improvements in infrastructure as well. As a country, with this budget, we will march forward."

 Mr S.C. Choudhary
Commissioner of Customs, Visakhapatnam

Mr Hemant Choudhary

"A 10 percent service tax has been levied on the Housing sector. Now a builder will not only end up paying sales tax but will also have to pay an extra 10 percent service tax which is levied if the apartment complex has more than 12 units. So far, service and sales tax were never applicable together - this point has to be clarified by the Finance Minister. Eventually, a middle-class employee, who I consider the only 'honest tax payers', planning to buy a house will eventually end up suffering as the tax burden will get passed on to him.

Mr Hemant Choudhary
Contractor and Builder, Former Chairman of MES Builder's Association of Visakhapatnam Branch

Mr Kancharala Vijay Kumar

"The proposed budget has lowered excise duties which is good news for the businessmen of Vizag. The introduction of Value Added Tax from the 1st of April will have its advantages. Banking transaction tax of Rs 10 which is proposed to be charged on cash withdrawal of over Rs 10,000 in a single day is also not a good decision as a home makers generally tend to withdraw more than Rs 10,000 for payment of electricity bills, school fees, house tax, fuel, etc. Many of such points need to be re-worked."

Mr Kancharala Vijay Kumar
Secretary of Vizagapatnam Chamber of Commerce, Member, Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee, East Coast Railway
