The inception of Mahila Action (Ma):

Home

Mahila action ("Ma") is a Woman headed Non-Governmental Organization established in 1995.The organization's aim is to work for the welfare of the women and children and also to promote gender equity and women empowerment. The organization is also registered under 12(A) & 80(G) of income tax Act.

We are effectual to access to constitutional and legal right to food, employment and social securities entitlements for the traditional fisher communities, tribal, poor and excluded, strongly struggle to stop unjust and in equal trade policies affecting the poor, women and peasant and excluded communities.

"Ma" works for the under privileged women and children and took as challenging issues of child labors education, prevention of HIV/AIDs, collectivization and forming of groups in between women, promote gender equation and to bring awareness about the Rights of the women, eradication of trafficking, Domestic Violence, abuses and prevention of IInd generation into prostitution.

Since its inception it has been relentlessly working for the empowerment of Women and children. It commenced its activities with the child labor and started Child Labour school in Rangireeju veedhi in the year 1995.

Our persistent efforts to ameliorate the conditions of children being employed as labor in the form of providing education and nutrition to these children received impetus with sanctioning of NCLP School and the school is being run in the RANGIREEJUVEEDHI.

By 2004 March the number of self help groups organized by Mahila action reached 66. The emphasis in the groups was on promotion of self confidence, inculcation of saving habit and thrift, providing inputs to improve the capacities of the women and encouraging the women to start micro enterprises for generating income for the sustenance of their families. Recognizing the work of the Mahila action in bringing hope in the lives of many women in the groups of the Mahila action, JICA JAPAN evinced interest to build partnership with us. Since 1st July 2004 Mahila action JICA Japan are working together to promote gender equality and empowerment of women.

Recognizing the work done by Mahila Action in the field, the Action aid India took us as partners and gave various projects. The projects envisaged provision of inputs on the issues like protection of human rights to sex workers, creating awareness in legal matters, health, rehabilitation, formation of self help groups, provision of protecting community women, PLWHAs, fisher folk women, sex workers from all sorts of violence's.

The organization is also working for the well being of the fisher folk women and children & addressing them to protect themselves about the domestic violence, harassments and also conducting frequent meetings to them to tell about the rights, acts, and awareness on violence's etc. in the project Tsunami Response Programme.

With the support of Asha Washington, we established a bridge school at Vambay colony to the children of various categories like single women children, HIV affected children, sex workers children, fisher folk children, child laborers and drop out children were given placement in the school.

In November 2007, Mercury Phoenix trust has supported Mahila action to work for the voice of the sex workers against HIV/AIDS to raise awareness at all levels through advocacy and social mobilization to create a supportive environment for sex workers, to provide knowledge among sex workers about the spread of HIV/AIDS,STIs and methods of prevention, promoting correct and consistent condom use with regular partners/clients, provision of regular counseling and other support services through counseling centers, ensure access to voluntary testing, health education, awareness, protection of rights etc.

Mahila action is collaborated with NATSAP and GD-Sanjog Balahita partners and working on the project title; Anti child trafficking, abuse, exploitation from November 2007 on prevention of child trafficking, abuse, sexual exploitation, and reintegration and rehabilitation of survivors in the target area named Kallupakalu (Red light area).
